A Link for Friday

This week’s From the Archive Friday from MIT Press is an article on the spread of rats (Rattus rattus) in Roman and medieval Europe and the transmission of the Black Death (Michael McCormick, “Rats, Communications, and Plague: Toward an Ecological History”). Lots of interesting tidbits, but the neatest in my mind is that rats most likely moved inland by hitching rides on carts – and that we might be able to track the development of cart routes by following the spread of rat colonies.

MIT’s #ftaf articles are only available for a week, so go grab it before its too late.
