Paul Shaw’s Rules for Research

Typographer Paul Shaw has a good post on doing research up at his blog, complete with some wonderful illustrations. The focus of his advice is on researching letterforms, but the spirit and some of the rules are applicable to any kind of historical research. In brief: go beyond the internet, use catalogs and finding guides, seek out interesting ephemera, and never assume what you’re looking for will be easy to find.
